Chris Lively Pottery
In my work, I want the clay to come to life. I do this by utilizing the properties of the clay. All work is thrown on the potter’s wheel. The thrown forms leaves me with a blank canvas that I can make my marks. Pushing in and out, cutting the clay are some of the ways I do this. In my forms I am influence by the environment that surrounds me, rolling hillside and mountains, and also the gestural qualities of the human form. I also want to show an energy that is emerging from within the vessel. These marks and alterations setup the glazing process. Spraying glazes allows me to create a flowing surface. The glazes that I favor have a certain degree of unpredictability. The glazes flow and intermingle with the changes in the form. In the end I want to show energy and movement that give the form life.
I chose to work in clay because each time that I work it is always new and different. I’m always thinking what if I push this a little further. I want my work to reflect this energy and show my excitement I have for this medium. Clay has become my material for making objects. The material, the process, and the objects all contribute to what I make and who I have become as an artist.
